There is a valve (sphincter) at the top of the stomach that should be closed when not swallowing to prevent acid from the stomach to back up into the esophagus, and thus creating the condition. In order for that valve to operate correctly requires the proper nutrition to maintain that process.
Referenced earlier was the term hydrochloric acid. Sufficient salt intake is required for the production of hydrochloric acid, which breaks down food to be passed on to the next stage of digestion. Many people are on low sodium diets that interfere with the production acid.
